Today is our first component review. The component we reviewed is the Philips AmbientLED 8-Watt (40W) A19 Light Bulb. You can buy it at home depot for under 22 dollars, and is supposed to last 22 years if used 3 hours a day. Granted if you don't have windows(the clear material in walls that you look through to see what's on the other side) like us this mean this will be on a whole lot longer. Still it would be a decent lifetime. This is a led light so it is way more efficient then an incandescent bulb or a flourescent. It generates less heat, has no mercury, and uses 8 watts to give off the same light an incandescent bulb does at 40. Don't let the yellow fool you. It just gives the light a "warmth" to it. Trust me it is very white and very bright. I had a 4 bulb fixture with two bulbs burnt out so I bought two and they really lit up the room. Only the yellow sections light up so it has much less ligh producing surface then the other two types of bulbs but is more then sufficent. It is also much heavier and sturdier built. I imagine you can drop this without it suffering more then cosmetic damage. As it is a led the bulb includes electronics to allow it to work with ac current. It can also be dimmed. A large section is dedicated to a heat sink to help deal with what heat it does generate. The actual bulb section is in three parts with a led-or led array for each I suspect and possibly some sort of reflector. I had only two, both needed and at nearly 22 dollars I wasn't about to do a tear down. As I use them I expect 11 years of life. I doubt at their cost many people are going to toss their still working inefficient bulbs away but will instead be used to gradually replace those that burn out, especially in hard to reach areas. Hey a bulb I dont have to climb a three story ladder to replace until 22 years! These are lights that if you move you will take them with you. From the short time I have had them they do well. Lights that use little energy, won't pollute the environment, won't burn you if you touch them(but won't help heat up rooms), and last years is a pretty good deal. Buying them would be a bright idea.
